Weather fine. Track Good 3. Rail True.

The times were once again incorrect. I don’t know what is going on here. Last meeting I agreed with all of their times but once again they were all around 0.30 faster than I got off the video. I have shown my video times below as there is absolutely no way you can get the times they got officially.

Even pace: Solzhenitsyn 34.32 got a nice trip 3 back inner, got out at the right time and won with a gear up his sleeve. An obvious one to win more races. Special Steps fought well as did Govind.  Abterra Chaparral ran around in the straight and found the line hard late.

There was a bias towards on pace runners. All flat winners either led or sat outside the leader. Whether it was because of the track condition or just the fastest horses were on the pace is the question. I tend to favour the latter.

Best three to follow: Charlie Brown, Penstar, La Montoya

Even pace:  Versailles set an even pace to the turn and just kept going to win decisively. Snave drove through late on the fence and Ab O’Reilly had every chance and battled 150m out. He was sent out an odds on favourite but he had every chance last start in a slow time so was a false favourite here.

Track Good 3 Rail Out 5.5m

Some very good performances on the day headed of course by Time Keeper. He just keeps going to a new level. The track played evenly and I’ve spotted a number of horses to definitely watch out for next up. The disappointment of the day was Aspinal not winning. As you will see from the sectionals, she should have won comfortably if she was as good as I thought she was. Maybe she just needs more ground but you couldn’t back her with confidence until you have seen her next start.

Best three to follow: Leica Scotch, Beau Ideal, November Rain

Even Pace: Pennachio 33.50 landed a good $10k bet earlier in the morning. The Good track was a concern but she showed no dislike for it and held on to win well. She has a high leg action and should be even better as the tracks get deeper, so she is in for a good season. Irish Colleen dashed late and will also appreciate any easing of the track. Rest had their chance.

Muddling pace: Layla Rose ( Full sister to 6 win mare Irlanda )got the lead just after the 1000m mark then slowed them up from about 700m out which caused a change reaction of checking behind her. She kept kicking to just hold on from Mr Charlie Brown who showed more pace and fought on gamely after working up outside the leader. Kohi Road had no favours but stuck on very gamely. Crystal Habit hung badly throughout and was checked in the back wash. The rider said she is better suited to right handed racing.

Moderate pace: Joe Jumble got a cheap lead, kicked well 300m out and just held on. Keepa Chaval, a half sister to Mufhasa sat 2nd outer, loomed 200m out, started to run out under the right had whip, then Spratt surprisingly didn’t or couldn’t change hands to the left side but persisted in using the right hand whip and ran out under it again costing it the win. She closed hard and was a stride too late. If she had changed to the left side it would probably have won. A nice ride for a left hand rider is up for grabs there. Simfinnarley trailed and battled on well for third. The rest had their chance.

Top rider Hayden Tinsley has given us his thoughts on the track and his rides, which make for interesting reading.

Hayden said about the Track:

‘I rated the track a genuine dead. Suited all runners that wanted the cut in

the track. Just chipping the top off it. Some suggested the inside was off

but I don't think it was.’

Good pace: Katheleen Angels won this at the start when she flew out and was able to cross them. She had the rail advantage from there and won nicely. She has been a bit weak so it was an improved effort. Sanriba stuck on well for second.

Hayden said about Special Steps:
‘Very big and heavy horse that struggled with the speed over 1000m. Jumped ok and had the pace to be with the pace makers but failed to keep up the tempo.
Was pushed a little wide from the 2nd horse pushing out 500m from home then weakened. Has a small wind problem so that will stop him from showing his full potential. Didn't feel like a $1.40 shot.’

The rest were out-paced.

Good pace: Run Like Al 34.00 was simply too good after working from his wide draw and when he is on top of his game he is a force to be reckoned with. The Easter is not beyond him. Raid did well to hang on for second after setting a good pace. Dashing Donna showed more dash  and fought on well. La Etoile 34.16 was certainly the eyecatching run of the race. She looks on track for the Easter or maybe the breeders.

Weather fine Track Good 2 Rail out 3m.

With the rail out 3m you would think the start of the races would be a few metres in front of the distance markers at the start but they weren’t so I have adjusted the times accordingly for the 1400m and 1580m races.

Even pace: Jungle Time was allowed to settle into the 1x1 without having to do much work and challenged hard 100m out and edged away. His run for second at Avondale indicated he was capable of winning a maiden. Ursa Major stuck on well after being outside the leader. All Chat had to do some extra work to get up to them 200m out and fought on gamely. Favourite Lord Brillante was back and wide 70m out and was never likely.

Even Pace: Extra Explosive disputed the pace on the inner and kicked clear 150m out and was too good. Hassle Free got a nice trail and fought on well. Diamonds in Time 3 back on the fence battled on well. St J’Adore had plenty of money to say she would win and looked to be going well 600m out but didn’t appear to handle the Dead track and was eased out of it 200m out. Could be a quick improver on a Good track.

Pace even: Rio Fortune  got a nice sit and came with the last run at them. Fledgling was 6th 3 wide with cover and kept fighting gamely – a good effort.  Italian Princess had her chance as she sat 2nd outer and they went out the first 600m the slowest of the three 1200m races. Maybe she was a bit flat second up.  Kaaptan found the line well. The Heckler stuck on gamely after being 3 wide on the pace, and Rio Nugget had no luck in the straight and looked to have a bit in reserve.
