Paeroa Sunday September 5th

Good morning,

I have previewed the quaddie and one other race. No Premier Bets.

Recommended multi Race 3 8.Tom Kiah and Race 11 3.One Cool Family

Race 3

8.Tom Kiah  3rd NTD Rider fell asleep won well here two back after having the blinkers go on.

He battled back on the flat last start but gets in here on 61kgs which is a good pull over the better performed top two. He jumps well and looks a solid chance to win again. RP $2.80

Race 8 First leg of quaddie.

Need all five here.

15.Eclectic charged home too late at Counties and with a significant rider change with Michael Coleman jumping on replacing the young apprentice, she looks set to come with the last run at these on the heavy track. RP $2.80

Dangers: 14.Tricky 2nd $2.20 ran a solid second last start and will relish the heavy 11 track. Should be fitter now too. 7.Suchacooldude 3rd $6.60 Tri $486 led on the right handed Pukekohe track and was worn down late on a heavy 11 track. Didn’t fire left handed last start. Back this way round could lead them a merry chase. 11.Fletcher Baybe 1st $3.80 just battled over 2100m three starts back then ran better over shorter distances. They could have started in the last race but opted for this. She has won here on a slow track over 2200m, so with the 3kg allowance could now be ready to strike. 1.Waitoki Ahi’s best form is on heavy tracks and good trifecta chance.

Race 9

With only four runners take all four as it is a raffle.

2.The Skull is likely to lead here and if he can get a soft mid race sectional, he can kick on these and be hard to run down over 1150m. RP $2.40

Dangers:. 4.La Bella Signora stuck on much better than I thought over 1400m last start. She hasn’t won from 4 attempts right handed and never won on a heavy track. But she the 1150m will suit and MacDonald is on board so she’s a mystery runner. 1.Dane Fantasy 1st $5.40 prefers better ground and both of his wins have been within 15 days of his last start- has a 31 day break here. 3.Bert won an R90 race two back all but one were rated 78 or less. Didn’t fire last start.

Race 10

Need all five here.

10.Sunny Rocks gets her best chance for a while to win a maiden. The 1150m should suit and she has early speed. The 4kg allowance has to make her hard to keep out this time. RP $2.70

Dangers: 4.Lladro was caught 3 wide on the pace and wilted over the last 200m. Back to 1150m he could upset these with Danielle Johnson on board who is riding with excellent judgment. 2.Foxhill had the blinkers go on last start and it made a big difference. If he repeats that effort he has to be hard to keep out. 9.Verdasco made nice ground in a strong form race in January 2009. He’s had a long time off but strikes the right race to kick off in- interesting that he has had no trials this time round yet had plenty of trials before his last campaign. 7.Postage raced greenly on debut after looking to be going okay on the turn. Nice second here in a trial.

Race 11

One Cool Family looks the best anchor of the four legs. Take the other three in a saver.

3.One Cool Family 1st $3.80 ran a game second here two back with a gap to third. He then battled well for third after being second 150m out in a stronger field at Te Rapa. Allende has won since as has Shanamagh ( 5th) . So he looks the logical one. RP $3.00

Dangers: 12.Posh Bec closed strongly wide at Te Aroha. She should get an economical trip and will be suited by the extra distance now. 13.Princessabeel 2nd $3.00 Qu $23.50has been going solid races since winning. Blinkers go on and with the 2kg allowance has to be a chance. 11.Peace Lilly has the ability to win but you have to catch her in the right mood.

Apart from Hypnotize winning his third Great Northern, a good day to forget. Nicole Amy ran the worst race of her life and Eminence broke down.

Saturday September 4th

Good morning,

I have previewed most races from both New Zealand meetings. I have no selections for Australia but I will post The Insider’s selections by noon today. I’m looking forward to seeing if Hypnotize can make it win number three as I’m sure you are too.

Bet of the Day Wanganui Race 9 4.Eminence ( Sectional Special ) Opened $2.00 FF

Value bet of the Day Auckland Race 9 1. Nicole Amy Opened $4.00 FF

Premier Bets (Balance $300) Balance $0

$75 win on Nicole may at $4.00 FF

$225 multi Nicole Amy and Eminence at Opening odds to return $1800

Ellerslie

The rail has come in 3 metres since the last meeting which will expose some better ground you would think. So in the first couple of races on pace runners near the fence could be in winning positions.

Race 1

4.Lamington Vegas has good early speed and if Harry Kasim can get across to sit outside the leader then take a sit if something takes them on, she will be in exactly the right place to win this. She is a smart mare and will have improved with that last run here and should win more than any of these. Gets a 4.5kg swing in the weights over Rusty Devil this time. RP $2.70

Danger: 5.Rusty Devil 2nd $1.50 won easily here last start but will get back and come wide. He may struggle to make ground on the leaders if the inside is offering better going, which is likely.

Race 2

11.Happyto Keepa 2nd $1.90 Qu $7.30  won impressively on debut and with her early speed can lead or be close to it which should be the place to be early on today. She was strong on the line at Rotorua and with the drop in weights she could kick on these and be very hard to run down. RP $4.00

Danger: 1.Saint Pat will be favourite but has drawn wide so may get caught out in the slower stuff in the straight. He is a smart horse but if Happyto Keepa gets a decent break on him on the turn he may be all out to catch her. 13.Art Beat 1st $7.30 on a better track would be a definite chance but the heavy track is a question.

Race 3 Tricky race- good one to watch.

Race 4 Heavy track can trip some of these up- pass.

Race 5

3.Joint Effort was a class above them at Riccarton. Clever jumper who lovers her racing. Can make it 4 in a row. RP $5.00

Dangers: 10.Man O’Mann is a tough hurdler and will be at peak fitness for this. 1.Counter Punch is as game as they come and you couldn’t leave him out. 6.Waitaha Toa could easily win this as well in an even race.

Race 6

A tricky race.

7.St Germaine needed her fresh up run and always gives her best. Weighted to be right in this. RP $4.00 Currently $4.00 FF

Dangers: 1.Ginga Dude 1st $2.80  has had two winning trials to get ready and with the 2kg allowance is also in it even on the heavy track. 6.Time Keeper is a tough galloper and will probably lead. If he gets away with the track conditions he could easily win it. 8.Kamikaze Flyer. I liked how he found the line late here last start. On 49kgs he could be the upsetter.

Race 7

1.Hypnotize. Going for his third win in the race and with the very heavy track likely, as long as he is within 20 lengths of the leader at the bottom of the hill the last time he can win despite the weight. RP $1.80 Currently $2.20 FF 1st $2.50

Dangers: 3.Brushman was doing some nice work on the line last start here and has won in the bog at Trentham. Will be improved by that last run so obvious danger.2.Fair King won this on a better track last year. Definite trifecta chance. 6.Mali Juraj with Scott on board from the Wheeler stable could be the dark horse.

Race 8

An even race so go wide.

13.Matakan finished hard last start behind subsequent winner Allende with Shanamagh 5th and winning as well last week. Drawn to get sweet trip and with 2kg allowance has to be hard to keep out. RP $3.00

Dangers: 2.Moni Nui is racing towards a win and handles the mud and drops in class.6.Nothing Likeazam was impressive winning on debut and looks the type to go on with it. 12.Thornbirds showed toughness to win last start and in similar conditions could repeat. 11.Eezejet made good ground last start and is just the type to upset.

Race 9

1.Nicole Amy Missed – ran the worst race of her life. had a 56 day break before resuming at Otaki where she looked in need of the run and led 100m out and was swamped. Then next start at Te Rapa she relaxed nicely about 7 lengths off the leaders and was travelling like the winner 600m out. She loomed up with 200m to go and drew away for a decisive win in this class 2kgs over the minimum. This time, she is 3kgs over the minimum with the 2kg allowance of Alvin Ng’s. Her last two runs on Heavy 11 tracks have resulted in  4.0 length and 4.8 length wins. She will be right at her peak for this and she is a real fighter with a will to win. There should be at least an even pace in this and Alvin is good at finding the best part of the track, so she looks well placed against these. RP $2.70

Dangers: 3.Don Dixit has a few things going for him here- deep track, back right handed and a winning weight. Maybe he didn’t handle the New Plymouth going and prefers this way round. If on top of he is the one Nicole Amy has to run down.

Race 10

No certainties here- go wide.

1.Five Sails was in the right mood last week after a good trip. She absolutely bolted in here on a  similar track in an R90 race beating handy horses. Gets in just 2.5kgs over the minimum so has to be hard to beat. RP $4.00

Dangers: 2.Seaflyte bolted in last start but question mark here is the deep track. 14.Albaladejo gets in on a winning light weight and will be at peak fitness now. Include 6,8, and 11 1st $5.50 to make sure of it.

Wanganui

Race 1

1.Alvesta 1st $1.70 won his first trial easily although didn’t race that truly down the right hand straight. Then in his last trial at Te Awamutu he jumped fast, led wide and was relishing his work down the straight and drew away to win. Both of his trials were in the fastest times on the Slow and heavy tracks. His dam, Rock Revival, won 7 sprint races in Australia including her debut on a Heavy track at Canberra over 1000m. He’s up against a bunch of unknowns but looks like a strong compact 2yo that should win races- this could the first. RP $1.70 Opened $1.70 FF

Race 2 – A few have been knocking in this so good one to watch.

Race 3 – Should be plenty of speed on here and difficult to sort out a winner from that so pass.

Race 4

4.The Hangover Missed closed strongly at Ellerslie on debut in a handy field.  He won a trial left handed at Cambridge and with the 3kg allowance with this good apprentice on, he can outfinish these. RP $3.00 Opened $3.20 FF

Race 5 Some handy mudlarks in here hard to line up with confidence so pass.

Race 6

1.Smoulder has won three races one of which was on a heavy track. She bolted in at her recent trial beating nothing but looked ready to strike first up as she did last campaign. The wide draw may be an advantage by this time of day. RP $2.50 Opened $2.80

Danger: 9.Stardom was just done late last start on a heavy 11 track after leading. Bred to win a few races.

Race 7 First leg of quaddie.

1.Just A Whisper 1st $3.00 won strongly last week and is proven backing up quickly. The 3kg allowance makes him the one to beat again. RP $2.70

Dangers: 3.Sacha could lead these and if she gets her own way could be very hard to reel in. 2.Tick Tock Turbo has won here on heavy tracks and has to be in combinations. 7.Dutch Striker fresh up with a light weight could sneak into it.

Race 8

2.Jimmy Choux 2nd $1.60 has had a good long build up to this and is ready to fire fresh. Should handle the track better than most and rider is very keen to stick with him. Tough to beat.

Dangers: 3.Shah will have improved from his Southern races and will relish a heavy track more than most here. 8.Fiddler 1st $8.50 had no luck last week and found the line nicely when clear. Fitter now too. 1.Cellarmaster 3rd $2.10 tri $110 prefers better ground and is a risk on a heavy track. 4.Flash Hapi won impressively last start.

Race 9

4.Eminence Missed- broke down  (Sectional Special )had no trials form but was well backed to win on debut here. He was half a length behind them on jumping but David Walsh scrubbed him up and he soon accelerated to sit outside the leader. Passing the 600m he was keen to get into his work and had a good stretch about him. After turning he soon drew clear and over the last 100m was drawing clear and won with a gear or three up his sleeve. His time was slightly better than the R70 race on the same day. He went out his first 600m 5 lengths slower than the r70 race and came home 6 lengths quicker but did it with much more in reserve. He’s had a good break since then and Peter McKenzie is a very good conditioner of horses and he wouldn’t be putting him over 1340m unless he was ready to win as he would have found a 1200m race for him. So from his wide draw, if he misses the jump slightly again David Walsh can have a clear run round them to get handy. By This time of day they will be wanting to be wide so he will be able to pick the right path to the turn and should be too good for these to the line. RP $1.70

Race 10

1.Addastar loves this track with all five of his wins coming here. He’s a horse you have to get at a long way out to keep him going and David Walsh knows him well having won on him four of those times. The heavy track will be ideal for him too. Watch for him to loom on the turn and fight right to the line. RP $3.40

Dangers: 4.Sunny Sunday won strongly here two back in this class on a heavy track. If she can get the lead and get a breather, she can keep up a sustained gallop and could pinch it. 10.Burger will be ready for 2040m now and he could easily upset. Include 2,8,9 and 11 to make sure of it.

Quaddie Preview

Leg 1-

Very open this leg

1. Zattero won easily last start and carries less weight, has won on the track over the distance and Nash has hopped on which is  always a good sign.

Dangers-2/Voltabolta,3/Siegel 3rd $1.90  and 6/Our Corsa 2nd $2.20

Leg 2-2 big chances and 1 outsider

1. Once Were Wild 2nd $1.20 Qu $5.80  -The class horse of the field. Has had two

trials to prepare for this running 2nd and winning. Has won on dead.

4. Brasilera 1st $7.20 on the wet track she comes into this, grows another leg on the wet stuff and distance is perfect. The other one to consider for a price is 6. Ashlee's Jewel- is a very good mare who likes a wet track.

Leg 3-2 main chances

1. Snow Alert 2nd $1.50 and 2. Hawk Island 1st $4.00 qu $3.80

The 2 class horses off the race and both at the peak of there form, both have drawn well, distance suits for both, trained by the master Chris Waller. The wetter the better for Hawk Island and if the track doesn't get soft Snow Alert will handle the

track. Both have heavy jockeys on them so weight  shouldn't be a factor

Leg 4-My anchor was scratched so you will have to take a few as a very open

race

1.Villiers 1st $3.50 Treble $136 -Won well 1st up last campaign winning in Victoria. They

have trekked up to NSW and Hugh Bowman has hopped on. Won in a good time 1st up and the horse that ran 3rd in that race has gone on to win 3 races.

Others to take-2,3,4,7,8,9 16

Good Luck

Waverley September 2

There is a real lack of form in most races so on the heavy 11 track there are only two horses I can select with any confidence. The quaddie legs are lacking form and you are better off spending $5 on a Lotto ticket.

No Australian selections today but there will be tomorrow.

Race 2

3.Binklebonk 1st $3.10 did very well to run down the runaway leader in the straight two starts back at Wanganui. Then next start ran a solid third in a stronger field than this.  The 2200m will suit as he is a tough galloper and Jonathan Riddell jumps on. He is at peak fitness and is going to be hard to keep out here. RP $3.00 Opened $3.60 FF

Race 5

5.Goldmist 1st $3.40 won impressively fresh up over 1340m then won in good time again next up at Wanganui. Then after that he was slow away in a much stronger field, got back and was doing his best work late. With a 40 day break he will have freshened up nicely and the small field will suit him ideally. If he can settle at the back of them and cruise along, then get wound up on the turn, he can sustain a long sustained finish so will be very hard to keep out in this. RP $2.50 Opened $3.20 FF

The Insider and I have put our heads together to come up with our quaddie selections. The track is good with some nice horses going round.

Race 4 First leg of quaddie

An even race to kick off with –go wide.

1.Elusive Bounty races on the pace but drawn wide so no certainty from there. If he gets all favours can win though. RP $4.00

Dangers: 7.Pacquiao was caught wide on a good pace on an unsuitable heavy track on debut. Expect a big run from the O’Shea stable on the improved surface. One for an upset at $16. 6.Goldstone 1st $8.20 – bolted in by half a head !  has had two nice trial for 2 thirds. Money on from Cummings stable- include. Others to include: 2,4, 5, 12,13

Race 5

Here’s your anchor and a saver ( just in case Pureness falls over. )

2.Pureness 1st $1.80 and walked in. will lead and the improved ground can only help him make it three in a row. Won with gears in hand last start and stable expects it to go through grades quickly. RP $1.60

Quinella chance: 7.Rockin’ Rocket drawn to get the trail and worth taking as a saver on smaller percentage ticket. Nice quinella chance.

Race 6

Take all three below.

5.Byzantine strong mare looking for the extra distance as it has found the line well in her first two wins. Second up may be a concern but trained by the master, Peter Snowden, so can make it a hat trick. RP $2.50

Dangers: 2.Kerilla 1st $16.70 missed start, went round to lead, kicked and held on. will likely lead and if she gets a soft time could steal this. 6.Last Rain had no favours last start but fought on well for third. Will appreciate better ground now.

Race 7

Take all four below

13.Slater. The boom horse according to rider Jim Cassidy. Beat Somehoday Somehow and it won smartly next up. Draw is the concern so no certainty. RP $2.40

Dangers: Take 7.Flow Concept, 8.Riebeek 1st $15.70 quaddie $2332 Treble $294 and 11.Not a Snip of Doubt 2nd $1.60 Qu $37.00 as if Cassidy gets caught posted one of these three should win.

Good morning,

I have previewed every race at Hastings. The track is currently a Slow 8 and our track walker’s report is worth reading below. I have gone through the Tauranga fields and I just can’t select anything with any confidence on the bog there except for one horse in the last race but she will be short. If we had a synthetic track in the Waikato this meeting would have been ideal to transfer it to. So I’d suggest watching those races and concentrating on the better fields and track at Hastings. No Sectional Specials or selections from me in Australia today.

The Insider’s Australian selections will be posted by noon.

Hastings August 28th

Our track walker at Hastings reports that from the 1600m to the 1000m it is noticeably slower than it is from the 1000m to the winning post. It is a Slow track from the 1000m and on the better side of Slow. It has a good sole of grass on it and there seems to be no advantage across the width of the straight. So it should favour on pace runners.

Race 1

Likely pace of the race: With most of the field having raced on the pace at their recent starts it should ensure a strong first 400m, then it depends on what wide runners do. Some will no doubt press on and try to get one off near the pace which should set it up for a strong closer.

6.Lord Alex

He unleashed some impressive strides last start after getting no favours early in the race. The way he finished it off and with the look of him, he is going to win races and with a solid pace likely here, it will be interesting to see what rider Hayden Tinsley does. He has shown early speed from wide draws before but he showed that he can really unleash if ridden colder last start. It may depend on how he jumps but I’d be keen to see him snag back and use that powerful finish in a race that looks as though it will suit that type of runner. RP $4.00 Opened $5.50 FF

Dangers: 2.Playboy won smartly at Otaki and has been kept on the fresh side for this. He will get back and the solid pace should suit him. 1.Klose  1st $6.00 is a tough galloper as he showed when winning on ground he wasn’t comfortable in last start. That toughness should get him right into this. 5.Model To Nite should get a cosy trip behind the leaders and based on her smart win on debut should be right in it as well.

Other thoughts. 8.Zorro’s Star 3rd $4.00 had no favours second up and has ability. No luck fresh as well. The rest should battle to beat the above runners.

Race 2

Likely pace of the race: With half the field looking to be on the pace early, it should be good for the first 400m. Then it just depends on what is caught wide and if they want to press forward. The handy draws should allow those runners to get cosy trips and be the ones to beat. Even pace likely.

4.El Primero Missed was ridden out of the gates when leading at Avondale and kept up a strong gallop throughout to win decisively beating a couple of handy horses. Then he showed up at the Te Teko trials and wasn’t rushed early and settled about 5th between runners. He angled wider on the turn galloping strongly and wasn’t asked for a serious effort with gears up his sleeve and ran to the line in third place with some better performed horses all round him. He is a fine looking Pins 3 year old and has drawn nicely at three. His breeding and trial gallop indicates a Slow track will be no trouble. He will no doubt be ridden out early to get on the pace and may end up in front with his natural speed. He can then take a sit depending on what others do, but either way he looks well placed to win as the inside is fine and if he can get a break early in the straight he is going to be very, very hard to pull back. RP $2.40 Opened $3.60

Dangers: 13.Ying Yang Master looks like a nice galloper. He was ridden out in his trial to win and may be better left handed. In his first trial win he disputed the pace and drew out over the last 100m keeping up a strong gallop.  He has early speed so with a decent trip this expensive purchase should be in it. 9.Gospel looked good in his trial when running second then had no favours on debut at Ruakaka. Should be better for that experience as well.

Race 3

Likely pace of race: With only Spare A Fortune and Ease Hours being proven leaders or on-pacers they look to have the pace to themselves. I’m picking Spare A Fortune will take a sit if he is taken on by Ease Hours so I can’t see anything faster than an even tempo and it should suit runners on the pace.

5.All In Tempo 3rd $1.20 copped a decent check fresh up at Te Rapa but did quite well to get as close as he did in the end. He has enough early pace to settle what could be in the 1x1. From there he is going to be hard to keep out with the weight 3.5kg advantage over Spare A Fortune. He put in some very good efforts last campaign. RP 2.60

Dangers: 1.Spare A Fortune 1st $4.70 With the inside draw he is going to do little work either in the lead or the trail. I can see him getting a nice track into the turn behind Ease Hours and in what could be a sprint from the there, he is going to take some catching. The top weight won’t come into play as much in a sprint home. The 3.5kgs he’s giving to All In Tempo has swayed me against him in favour of All In Tempo. 7.Balaq will appreciate the better track. The heavy conditions didn’t suit him last start. 2. Alagant Satin won her trial well but gets back which may count against her.

Other thoughts: Ben Hogan could go a cheeky race fresh up but may not have the sprint off a moderate pace to catch the others. No Cash 2nd $2.10  has drawn to get a cosy trip just behind the leaders and from there has to be a trifecta chance. Ease Hours should be outclassed as should Tridane.

Race 4

Likely pace of the race: Timbuktu will go forward from his wide draw and probably lead. Four others will be looking to position up just behind him and I can’t see much midrace pressure, so a moderate pace is likely.

8.Timbuktu 3rd $2.10 could get an uncontested lead here. He has won both of his starts here over 1400m leading all the way. The first one in a good speed rating and the second one in a fair time as well. Then last start he was just too strong again as well over 1400m on a heavy track beating Smart Molly which won during the week. He is a solid eachway bet. RP $4.50 Opened $7.00 FF

Dangers: 1.Superturf won smartly last start 1kg over the minimum. He is 3.5kgs over this time and on a better track when all of her wins have been on heavy 11 tracks. He is an improved horse but is no good thing this time. 11. Spartanicus looks set to get a nice trip behind the leader as he has early speed. If he secures the 1x1 or sits outside the leader, he is right in this. 4.Megan’s Tough Love will very likely be in the trail and with the allowance and better track, could be a real chance.

Race 5

A tricky race to bet confidently in. Quite a few different formlines to compare.

Likely pace of the race: Good. Bruce Almighty will lead and he always sets a decent pace. Atom Cat can slot into the trail. Salvatore will go forward and end up outside the leader giving Elblitzem a nice sit in the 1x1. Taking The Mickey from the inside should be able to settle 3 back on the fence. Most should get in at least one off with Bruce Almighty creating gaps in the field with the good tempo. It should suit all runners.

10.My Keepsake is a smart mare. She won the Queensland Oaks and showed very good ability before that in New Zealand. She will get back but with at least an even pace likely, she can come with the last run at them and with the weight advantage, she is going to be hard to keep out. RP $3.40

Dangers: 7.Taking The Mickey ran a beauty in the Winter Cup. He almost won and could have won if James McDonald had pushed him out on the line instead of using the whip. Have a look at the replay and you will see what I mean. The Slow track will suit him and he won’t cover any extra ground from three back on the fence. I noticed he was given a really strong preliminary at Riccarton, so he may be given a similar warm up to get him in the mood again. 8.Atom Cat will get a nice suck along probably in the trail and he is fit and ready to win on the Slow track which will suit him ideally. Gets a 2kg allowance so has to be in this. 2.Bruce Almighty will no doubt lead and if there is no disadvantage to being on the fence then I’m sure he will have a break on them at some stage beyond the 800m mark and he could just keep going and steal it.

Other thoughts: Samurai won this race last year but with 59kgs he may struggle to outfinish a couple on significantly lighter weights. Elblitzem disappointed at Riccarton but goes well here and this time of year. Should get all favours. He won the Merial Mile last year and may just need this as he will be aimed at that again. Salavatore may struggle with a solidly run 1600m. Yanna Marie ran a fair race in the Winter Cup and on a heavy track is a realistic chance.

Race 6

Likely pace of the race: Even to Good.

7.Pinnafero has had three runs in now and even though it is a big step up in distance if Coleman can drop him back and put him to sleep at the back, then get a nice track into it, he has a strong final 200m that he can put to good use here. He ran a very good fifth at WFA behind Sir Slick over 1600m beating good horses. Just the type to upset these. RP $5.00 Opened $12.00 FF

Dangers: 3.It’s a Message. I expected him to be hard to beat last start and he won at very good odds. He is still on the up and from the handy draw will get all favours again. 14. Affairoftheheart 1st $5.90 will appreciate a better track and should be at peak fitness for this. 5.Yangming if he settles will be right in this. But he may over-race with the slower tempo.

Race 7 An open race for the first leg of the quaddie

Likely pace of the race: Either Regal Governor and Waitui Music are likely to land in the lead. Dubhdara, Casual, Keep Ahead and Margrethe will look to settle behind the leaders. The pace should be an even one as there are runners here that will go forward if the pace slackens.

1.Dubhdara

He won decisively with 3kg claimer Leah Hemi on  a heavy track last start and this time last year he won back to back wins. He has won on Dead to heavy tracks and gets in nicely at the weights with 56kgs. Drawn to get all favours and looks the obvious one. RP $4.00 Opened $4.80 FF

Dangers: 6.Jowka. They have been mucking about with him on Heavy tracks and I feel he is best suited to a Slow or better track which he should get here. Drawn to get a cosy trip midfield and could be the upsetter at nice odds. I Am Sam is up in distance and is a full brother to 9 win Hustler which had two attempts past 1600m and failed in both. He’s a tough galloper and will get all favours from the inside and is hard fit. You couldn’t risk not having him in your quaddie. 3.Casual should get a nice trip and is very fit. He has won on Dead and Slow going and in a solidly run race will be right there.

Other thoughts. Regal Governor won fresh up over 2000 last campaign but would prefer a better track. Waitui Music has the blinkers off and may struggle over the last 200m as his best form has been over 1600m or less. Kuda Mahal hasn’t fired this campaign and steps up to 2000m for the first time. Couldn’t have him on that. Keep Ahead has drawn wide and will have to work to get in one off or drop back which I don’t think he will do based on his racing pattern. So he is a risk of getting caught wide and working too hard early. May prefer a heavy track as well. Margrethe will struggle up in class on the better surface. Winning Genes will drop back and with a good pace and all favours could upset. He won well at Te Rapa and has run three solid thirds since.

Race 8 An interesting race with two Australian mares appearing fresh up. I’ve had a good look at their key runs and trials.

Likely pace of race: Moderate. Our Joan Of Arc, Show Up and Centaj will all look to be in the lead or just behind it. I can’t see much mid-race pressure so it will suit on pace runners.

10. Show Up. 1st $3.40

I was sure she would go close to winning fresh up but with the rain about it put me off her. But she ran a beauty after balancing up half way down the straight and closed strongly right to the line for second. This time she has drawn nicely at three and has early speed to lead or take a sit just behind them. She looks to have strengthened up since last season and should get all favours here. She has a fitness advantage over the two Aussies and she is a smart mare so is a solid win chance. RP $3.00 Opened $4.20 FF

Dangers: 2.Silently 2nd $2.50 Qu $14.50  in her recent trial sat outside the leader on a slow pace, was travelling well when leading 250m out and was allowed to cruise to the line in fifth place. She won on debut over 1100m and ran second fresh up in a $70 k race at Rosehill. Second up she had the blinkers go on for the first time and sat three wide with cover and led 100m out and was crunched on the line. She is fresh up here again and has the blinkers going on. Wide draw is a concern but handles a slow track and James McDonald on board.

8.Our Joan Of Arc has won two in Australia and has early speed. The negative is she has raced 3 times on a slow or heavy track and not fired. Her recent trial on a slow/heavy track at Waverly, she sat three wide on a soft pace and didn’t let down at all on the going and was a distant fourth. The positive is she may get a soft trip on the pace and if the track has dried out could be hard to run down.

Race 9 Mudgway

There is a head to head bet available on Pennachio and Keep The Peace. Pennachio is going to be in the first 6 or so in the running and the track conditions are no concern. She won strongly running straight and true when winning left handed at Matamata on a Heavy track so no concerns left handed. Keep The Peace will more than likely be 4 back on the fence or worse and the fence could be off by this time of day. So she may have trouble clearing traffic and is reliant on a solid pace to get into it, so the $1.90 available on Pennacchio to beat Keep The Peace which is also at $1.90,  is excellent value. Option 424 1. $1.90 Pennachio

Likely pace of the race: Even and unlikely to be slower than that. Mufhasa and Run Like Al are likely to be the first two after 200m. But Bulginbaah, Fritzy Boy, Jacowils, Beautiful Girl and Hold It Harvey have all drawn wide. Pennachio and The Hombre are likely to want to secure the trail and 1x1 behind the two in front so those drawn wide are either going to have to sit three wide or if wider, use up some petrol to get up outside the leader. They have 600m before the first bend so I can’t see that first 600m being run at less than an even tempo. They may try and button off in front to get a breather but with a few likely to be caught wide I can’t see it, as they are likely to move early if they do. By this time of day the inside is likely to be chopped up and it may suit runners coming out wider. So it looks set up for a runner off the pace either one off or even three wide with cover. Pennacchio, Fritzy Boy, Bulginbah, and Wall Street fall into that category.

My choices after the draw:

I still think 13. Pennacchio ( Currently $8.00 FF) is very well placed to win this and is a great eachway bet. She went to the next level when winning in smart time at her last start in Australia easily beating Firebolt which went on to win very smartly next up. She will still have much of that race fitness to call on after just a short break. Metal Bender showed us that when winning well at Warwick Farm last week over 1400m after a 91 day spell. She has won on a heavy track and she won at Ellerslie fresh up running 33.50 for her last 600m off a good pace. Her high galloping action is ideal for a wet track and she has been training well. Andrew Scott has an excellent record with mares and she can win this. RP $5.00

4.Wall Street 2nd $1.70 ( Currently $4.50 FF ) has drawn perfectly at 5, so should be able to slot in about fifth or sixth and from what I have heard, he has matured and become stronger this time round. He has had one trial and I’m sure he will go on to even better things this time round. The fitness factor is the query of course but I can see him looming 200m out and he has to be the one to beat if he is fit enough. He won here last year on a Slow 8 track running 1.41.68 so if they run close to that time in the third race on the day you know he should be ok. Last year he did have two lead up runs before winning here so he is no certainty.

Other thoughts: Vosne Romanee has drawn wide and will very likely get caught wide so will probably drop back and get cover probably 3 wide. If the track is showing a bias to off pace wide runners then he could get into it as he is a very good galloper, otherwise, he is a good one to watch as he is being set for the Spring Classic later on more than likely. Mufhasa- I’m not sure if that big win in fast time at Otaki flattened him as he didn’t fire in Australia. He would prefer a better track as well. If he got a soft lead or trail, he could do it but I couldn’t be on him fresh up. Run Like Al battled on well in ground too wet for him last start. He won well fresh up when nowhere near ready which may have taken the edge off him. On a Dead track he would be a chance but on Slow I couldn’t be on. Fritzy Boy won this two years ago on a slow track after getting all favours. Then last year was caught 3 wide in the open on a good pace and weakened. He maps to get caught wide again. Good run here fresh up then had no favours in his only start in Australia. If the track got to heavy, you would have to include him in trifectas.

Vonusti would be a more realistic chance on a Dead or better track. The Hombre has drawn to get the trail and if the track is a true slow or better he could stick on for a place. On a Good track he could win, but he is more likely to get that in the Spring Classic and is my early selection for that race. Illuminates won strongly last week but out of her last seven starts within 11 days of her last start she has been unplaced, except for a 2.3 length second to Typhoon Tracy. The rest of that field were not up to this class. So after a flight and new surroundings, plus, all of her form is right handed, and from the wide draw, she is up against it. She does get in well at Weight For Age though.   Miss Maren $18 is the interesting runner at $18. She has won both of her last two starts fresh up in Australia. One over 1400m and the other over 1600m both off even and good tempos. But her only form on a Slow or worse track was a win fresh up at her second start in a maiden in a time equivalent to 1.27.2 for 1400m. If the track is showing a distinct bias to off pace runners coming wide by this time of day, which it could do, make sure she is in your trifectas. Keep The Peace looked terrific at the trials and could be three back on the fence and from there should be in this. But she may end up 4 back or worse and the inside may not be the place to be so I’m prepared to watch her. Eileen Dubh w on the Levin Classic which has proven to be a strong form race. With all favours, which she could get from the handy draw, she could sneak into a place to make the trifecta.

Race 10 A big field but I’m confident it can be narrowed down to four.

Likely pace of race: Moderate to even. Waitui Count, Court Dancer, Royal Delite, Miss Kaela and Diana will all look to be on the pace. With some runners likely to be wide down the back straight, some may press forward to get in one off so the pace should be no better than even and suit all runners.

15.Hi Flo is a smart High Chaparral mare. She tended to over- race and a do a few things wrong last campaign but she looked the type who would certainly get better with time. Alan Sharrock wouldn’t have picked out this race for her to kick off her campaign with unless he had her ready to win. She can sit three wide with cover and should still be hard very hard to keep out. Opened $7.00 FF

Dangers: 1.Capone hit the line strongly in a stronger field last start and drawn to get an economical run but may get back. With a clear run in the last 200m he could win. 9.Tickles. 1st $13.90 She has drawn wide but by this time of day, sitting 3 wide with cover could be the place to be. She is a smart mare as she showed when winning fresh up and last campaign she looked very promising. 12.Miss Kaela won well last start after getting all favours. She has had her races well spaced and is nicely placed at the weights to be hard to run down. I can see her leading somewhere in the straight and it just depends on what sort of run the ones above get as to whether she can keep it.

Tauranga

Race 9

10.Keep Eve Missed  won impressively fresh up in the mud at Avondale then ran a strong second over 1400m on a slow track back at Avondale. Then she sat three wide with cover at Te Rapa in a stronger field and found the line well for fourth beating better horses than these. She is bred to swim and with the 3kg claim she looks well placed. The only niggle is that a heavy 11 at Tauranga has tripped up horses that have handled that on other tracks but not here. RP $2.50

August 27th

Oamaru quaddie preview.

Race 6

1.Wellsey ran a game second on debut at Riccarton. The six horses that finished well behind have all won since. He also ran a solid third from a wide draw last start. With the time off he has bound to have grown and with the 2kg allowance and good draw, he looks the obvious one with the blinkers going on fresh up. RP $2.50

Dangers: 3.Hadadiamond. She ran a solid second last start and from the inside draw and with natural improvement, she could have the fitness edge on the Wellsey. 12.The Solitaire 1st $3.30 tried very hard on debut. If she can slot in one off behind the leaders, she is right in this.

Race 7

1.Shamrox. 1st $2.70 She impressed when winning on debut in a time just a couple of lengths slower than the Open Class runners. Then after a spell came back to win in the best Speed Rating of the day, including the Open horses, and did it in the worst part of the straight. From the handy draw she will be on the pace again and looks hard to beat. RP $2.20

Main danger: 5.Ashby Angus has been racing over 1400m which is too far for him. Back to 1200m with a 2kg allowance makes him much better placed. 3.Al Maaha pushed Shamrox close fresh up and won second up last campaign. 10.Outlaw Queen makes her debut in the south and if she gets a decent run from the wide draw could get up.

Race 8

7.Big Energy 2nd $2.00 was caught 3 wide in the open on the pace last start but kept on giving right to the line and just went down. RP $3.50

Dangers: 8.Calleryana was beaten in the bog last start. Back on a slow track where she ran a game third from a wide draw, she looks well placed here. 1.Three Tree Hill has had plenty of chances but the 1600m should suit now. 2.Prince Hakum should be ready for 1600m now after two runs. Strong 3rd here fresh up.

Race 9

3.Pentour 1st $3.20 will be fitter now after a game second here last start. He should secure the trail behind an even pace and be hard to keep out. RP $3.50

Dangers: 4.Danzatiger won well here two back in a faster time than the R80 race. He struck a stronger field at Riccarton next up but back here he will go better on the slow track. 6.Lord Matua ran a very strong second here two back then raced in a  strong field at Riccarton and had no favours. Has to be a strong chance back here. 7.High Forty put in a game 3rd here two back after getting no favours. Drawn to get all favours this time.

Value bet of the Day Race 2 4.Rangatira Opened $4.00 FF May get more on tote 3rd $1.30

Race 2

4.Rangatira won third up here in May 2009. Then at this time last year he won at Foxton on a heavy 10 track in an R80 race. He has had four runs back now and looks nicely placed against these to sneak a win with Hayden Tinsley jumping on board. RP $2.80 3rd $1.30

Race 3

3.Man O’ Mann ran a  strong third in the Open class Parliamentary then won his two hurdle races easily. He looks nicely placed at the weights for this. RP $2.60 1st $2.20

Race 7 First leg of Quaddie

3.Reynard’s Vixen has run two solid races since a spell and the extra ground will suit now. RP $2.90 2nd $1.50

1.Splendid Jewell 3rd $1.30  has had plenty of chances but wouldn’t strike a weaker field to beat. 2.City Class Rose will be fitter now and ran a strong third two back. 1st $6.00

Race 8

1.Hot Deputy ran a strong second in R80 class last start and looks the obvious one back in this class. RP $3.50

Danger: 13.Smart Molly 1st $3.70 ran home strongly after a short freshener. She is nicely placed at the weights to test the topweight.

Race 9

2.Mr Wagstaff 2nd $1.20 qu $7.50  has run two solid seconds and strikes a weak lot here. Opie Bosson jumps on and he looks the obvious one. RP $3.80

Dangers: 3.Keep The Recipe 1st $6.10 ran a game second two back and gets a 3kg allowance here which could just make the difference. 5.Edison led and was swamped late fresh up. Has been freshened again and could pinch it.

Race 10

9.Daiello 2nd $1.50 ran a game second fresh up after a good trial win. With natural improvement against a weak lot he gets a good chance to win. RP $2.90

Danger:

1.Jakes Mate put in a big finish on debut and with that experience under his belt he could easily win this. 7.Irish Jester won his trial strongly and has picked a nice race to debut in. Apologies, this selection should have been the winner 6. I’m Not Ticklish as some of you have noticed with the comment.

Good morning,

I have previewed most races. The track is currently Dead but rain is forecast. The bookies were slow in getting Race 7 odds up hence the reason for the delay in posting.

Bet of the Day  Race 7 3. Single Currency Opened $2.80 FF 2nd $1.50

Value bet of the Day Race 5 8.Caleta Opened $11 FF  Missed

Race 1 Little exposed form in this so a bit tricky.

10.Positive Dream looked good winning her trial after being on the pace all the way. From Shaune Ritchie’s stable with McDonald on so the bookies will keep him safe. RP $2.50 Missed

Race 2 Good race to watch

Race 3

9.Cool Storm has run two solid races here and has early speed and they can still win from wide draws from the 1000m start here. RP $3.00 1st $2.00

Race 4 6.Ma Belle Ami won on debut here over 1000m after disputing the pace from a similar draw. She then raced in the much stronger Matamata Breeders Stakes and showed good early speed but wilted from the 200m mark. With plenty of time to grow, she should come out stronger here and with James McDonald on board, she should get every chance to win. RP $3.00 2nd $1.40

Race 5

8.Caleta. He got back fresh up and looked to be travelling very well when checked 500m out, then recovered and had no room in the straight. He has drawn wide here but will get back anyway. If there is a good pace, which is likely, he can come with the last run at them. RP $3.40 Got back and ran on fairly wide for 6th.

Race 6

Weak race open to an upset.

6.Straight Melody ran a solid second at Wanganui and will appreciate the 1200m and good draw. RP $4.00

Dangers: 10.Shahla 1st $2.90 won her trial well but in slow time and the ones he beat haven’t done anything on the race track since. 1.Corks A Poppin 3rd $1.90 has shown enough in earlier races to warrant inclusion despite the draw. 5.Valeriefili drawn to get all favours and trialed nicely at Cambridge.

Race 7

3.Single Currency. Last start here he was expected to win and did it easily. His speed rating was the same as Allegrio’s on the same day but he looked to have more up his sleeve and will appreciate the 1400m. So he looks well placed to succeed with the step up in class. He should be able to handle a slow track if the rain comes. RP $2.60 2nd $1.50

Dangers: 9.Artesia 1st $6.30  found the line strongly behind Single Currency fresh up and won second up here last campaign. The blinkers go on and she looks the main danger. 10.Champagne Rose has been looking for 1400m for a few starts now and will appreciate the wet ground more than most if it gets to slow or worse.

Race 8

3.Shooting Daggers: 1st $7.90 he covered plenty of extra ground here last start but kept closing to run a game second. With a decent run he can win this.

Dangers: 2.Old Redfeather. He has a had a few chances but is ready to step back up to a middle distance now. 7.Eoghan was badly checked last start and looks the type suited to more ground. 13.Denali Dancer ran on nicely here last start and the middle distance will suit now.

Race 9

3.Erupt. 3rd $2.40 Ran strong closing race for 3rd two back at Counties, and didn’t get all favours next up. The blinkers go on and should handle a wet track better than most. RP $3.00

Dangers: 10.Bad Enough has run two strong seconds here and should handle a wet track. 9.Boomer Champ won his Peraoa trial well in good time on a heavy track and drawn to get all favours. 13.Tabu Soro 1st $6.80 battled on well second up and will be fitter now.

Race 10

6.Mastermind won strongly here over 1600m on a slow track, then fought on well over 2100m here. With a freshener he will be hard to keep out. RP $3.50 2nd $1.80 qu $8.80 Tri $121 Treble $379 Quaddie $2087

Dangers: 5.Montillini 1st $5.20 ran a strong second here in a stronger field last start. Drawn to get all favours. 10.Sirilak 3rd $3.20 has been going handy races and has drawn to get all favours and could be the upsetter in a weaker field.

Good morning,

I have previewed both quaddies today. There is nothing else I can select in earlier races with any confidence on the heavy 11 tracks. But there are two horses racing in Australia that look very well placed to win and both are Sectional Specials.

I will post the Insider’s Australian Selections by 10 .a.m.

Good luck

Neil

Moonee Valley 4.20 p.m.

Race 4 1.Curtana. ( Sectional Special ) On debut she ran a strong second at Flemington up the straight 1000m. Then next up she showed she had improved nicely to win at Caulfield over 1000m. Peter Moody gave her a 126 day break and she ran at Caulfield again. I was keen to see how she would go as I thought they may have gone too fast for her over 1000m. She jumped nicely and settled well 5th inner. Just before the turn Nolen asked her to go and she took a few strides to get going but once she got out into clear air she balanced up and this strong looking filly simply ran up to them 150m out and went to the line with a bit up her sleeve beating the boys. He Speed Rating was the best of the day, including Shoot Out’s and she ran her last 600m in 33.81. She definitely needs 1200m now and with 5 runners looking to be on the pace Nolen will let her find her feet early. She will settle about 6th or 7th and with a strong pace likely, she should be able to track into this and you would expect her to outfinish these as she will have improved with that first up run. The track conditions are currently Slow and her dam won twice on a slow track and up to 1500m at Group 3 level. RP $1.60 Currently $2.40 on overseas markets.

Warwick Farm 7.05 p.m.

Race 8

5.Pinwheel. ( Sectional Special ) He has had 12 starts for 6 wins and 6 seconds. Last start he showed how good he was when jumping nicely and settling just behind the pace. When he got out into the clear he quickly took the lead and won strongly in the fast time of 1.08.42 which was the same time Takeover Target won the race in a few years ago. It was a couple of lengths off the track record. He has drawn to lead early and then Nikolic can either dictate or take a sit if something gets serious and wants the lead. Either way I can’t see a lot of pace in the race as most of these have bigger assignments in mind and he has been tuned up for this. He had a trial here on his home track on Monday to get him ready for this. He has won on Dead and Good tracks and looks very well placed to take this out. RP $2.00 Currently $3.60 on overseas markets.

5.The Strutter

$5

A

Won’t mind a bog and has in form Jason Collett on board.

8.The Missing Link

$6

A

Ran on nicely last start and will improve with that. Weighted to sneak this.

Taranaki

Race 5

11.Young Yachtie. 3rd $2.60 Two starts back he was back to the turn, but when clear was given a couple and ran in. The rider had to straighten him a couple of times but he closed very well late over the 1200m. Then next start in the much stronger Ryder Stakes he settled back and kept battling on through horses. He is bred to handle the bog and will be fitter now. Craig Grylls jumps on and he can use the whip in the left hand and is a strong rider, so he could be the upsetter over a more suitable 1400m. RP $5.00 Opened $8.50 FF

Race 6 First leg of quaddie.

Won well last week and gets in well at the weights with the compressed handicap. He loves the mud and can make it a double.

Is as game as they come and has beaten better fields than this.

5.Don Dixit

The track probably wasn’t heavy enough for him at Riccarton. This time it will be and he can lead and if given a reasonable time in front could easily kick on these and be hard to run dow. He ran a top race behind Tudor Bubble here two back and she won in Open company next up.

8.I Am Sam 2nd $1.60

$4.00

A

He has won his last three starts here and should get a nice trip from the inside draw. He is tough and is an obvious include.

6.Ourforeignminister

$6

A

Fought hard last week and should be outside the leader and if there are no midrace moves, he has to be right in it at the weights.

2.Caught Out

$4.00

A

Solid 4th at Riccarton in much stronger field than this. Drops back to R70 class and looks well placed if David Walsh can get him into a nice position from the awkward draw.

5.Pascoe Brown

$4.50

A

Solid second last start and has won in the bog here. Right in this.

1.Garrod

$6

A

Solid effort last start in better field. With cosy trip could sneak it late.

Best Bet Of The Day

Warwick Farm R8 H5 Pinwheel 2nd $1.60 -Looks so obvious and here’s why. Has best sprint form in the field, great win last start in good time, is

race hard fit, great draw, good jockey, and the track is drying out and nearly everything else is first up and using this as a warm up. Will sit on the pace and be too strong for them. Odds$3.60 RP$2.30

Moonee Valley R6 H4 Secret Flyer Missed -Won this race last year flying home. Had 1

run already and came home nicely and

has a very good track and distance record. Second up last year ran 3rd to Nicconi and we know how good he is. Goes

well on slow and dead. Watch for him flying home.Odds$7.00 RP$2.50

Big Value Bet Of The Day

Moonee Valley R1 H9 Chase The Sun Missed -Ran home nicely for 2nd last start and is

finally fit. Likes the distance and Craig

Williams sticks with him. Likes a decent track and they get 1st use of it so should be just right for him. Odds$12.00 RP$4.00

Te Aroha Friday August 20th

I have previewed three races but ignored the quaddie. The track is a heavy 11 with rain predicted so we have to with proven mudders and I have found two that are in form. No Premier Bets.

Bet of the Day  Race 3 1. Jafa Jack Opened $2.60 FF

Value Bet of the Day Race 7 3. Kurosawa Opened $7.00 FF

Race 2

1.Hottenov. 1st $5.00 He ran two very good races first and second up and then was flat in the bog at Tauranga. He has had a chance to freshen up and from the handy draw will get a nice trip in behind the pace and be hard to keep out. RP $3.70 Opened $4.20 FF

Race 3

1.Jafa Jack.  Missed Three starts back he led all the way at Avondale over 2200m on a heavy 11 track. Then next start he led and battled over the last 200m. The trainer may have been a little soft on him for that but he wasn’t next start as he set a good pace and cleared out from 500 metres out and won easily in a two length faster time than the R80 race. He goes up in weight and class but should be able to get his own way in the lead again and with the toughness he has shown, is going to be hard to run down. RP $2.80

Quinella chance: 4.Tom Kiah had the blinkers go on over hurdles last start and he produced a strong late burst to get up. He is very fit and is a definite quinella chance. 8.Boydy’s Flight will handle the bog and with the light weight could make the trifecta.

Race 7

3.Kurosawa Missed had two runs back from a spell but did little. But then the blinkers went on last start at Te Rapa and he jumped well and settled about sixth. With 800m to go he was hampered and lost about 1 length but recovered well. On the turn he was behind runners and by the time he balanced up the winner, the smart Que Sera, had got a winning break. But he found the line strongly for second beating a better field than this. He has won and run a game second on Heavy 11 tracks so looks well placed to go one better fourth up. RP $3.50

Dangers: 9.Moni Nui has the blinkers going on which may just get the best out of him. He has won here in the mud.

Good morning,

The track is currently a Slow 8 but they had 20 mls of rain overnight and it is raining there this morning. I have only been able to find two well placed runners in the tricky fields. No Premier Bets.

The Insider has a couple of well placed bets in Australia which I will post by 1 p.m.

Race 2

2.The Hague. He did nothing at Te Awamutu on debut but showed much better form next start at Tauranga in the heavy ground. He raced second outer, was under a ride 3rd 200m out but kept on giving to run a game second. The rider just needs to ride with less body movement down the straight and the full effect of the 2.5kgs could be enough to get him home this time. RP $3.00 Opened $2.80 FF 3rd $1.70 after covering plenty of ground

Race 8

1.Sentinel. He has run two game seconds recently. The last one he was 3 wide in the open near the pace and looked beaten 300m out but picked himself up and showed real determination to run a close second. He has drawn handily and should be able to lead or take a sit. From there if he reproduces that last run he should beat these. RP $1.80 Opened $2.10 FF Missed after having every chance

Geelong R3 H5 Miss Elvee-Missed Ran 2 smart races last campaign in Saturday class.

Is back for a soft kill to start its campaign

and is beautifully drawn to sit on the pace and pull away from them in the

straight. Odds$2.40 RP$1.40

Randwick R2 H1 Giresun 2nd $1.10 -Has been screaming out for ground and the extra 150m

today suit it right down to the ground. Last start he

was taking ground off Squamosa and we know how good he is.Odds$2.50 RP$1.40

Southland v Counties (Sat 5.35pm)

Southland knows how to play in the conditions that will face both teams

tonight; cold, windy and slippery.  Counties on the other hand rely on an

open running game to generate points.  The experience of Southland's last

week's narrow win will add to their belief in themselves to overcome

adversity.  Counties have never won the Shield and I don't think it will

change today.

Wests v Penrith (Sun 5.05pm)

Penrith have won 11 of the last 13 clashes in the battle of the Mullet,

including the last five in a row (4 of those by 13 and over).  They have

also won all three clashes at Campbelltown, the venue for the Sunday

Showdown.  That's good enough for me to say they can win again.

St Kilda v North Melbourne (Sun 6.40pm - live on Sky)

North Melbourne's record against the top 4 teams this season has resulted in

5 losses from 5 attempts.  The startling fact is that those five losses have

been by 104 points (St Kilda), 66 points (Collingwood), 70 points

(Bulldogs), 35 points (Geelong), and 71 points (Geelong).  Putting it

bluntly they have a terrible record against quality opposition.    St

Kilda's offence is starting to gel with a season high 151 points last week

and they will steamroll the hapless Kangaroos on Sunday night.
