Wanganui review

Ones to watch out for are in Italics

Race 1

Ave Maria on debut jumped really well. Coming to the last she had her ears pricked and once over lifted late although Mesmerize ( Looked in need of the run which you would expect)  drifted wide after the last and gave her the advantage. Both horses cleared out from the rest and are in for a good campaign.

Race 2

It’s A Wonder  raced keenly again early in the race but was too strong after the last for Guy Fox  who had his chance. Trainer said It’s A Wonder  may go steeple chasing at Te Rapa.

Race 3

I’ve Got This  jumped well in front and showed real fight to lift and when looking like Gagarin  looked like a winner 150m out. Max looked in need of the run and just blew out after the last.

Race 4

Princeville was given the ideal run and got a winning break on Wicklow who was asked to do too much coming from last for a solid second. He was flat 600m out then picked up the bit on the turn. Should be further improved with that too. Kion ran on well for third- trainer said before the race ” He’ll be jumping this year and will definitely improve with the race.”

Race 5

Glorious Ocean jumped well, led, angled wider with a good ride by Lisa Allpress and kept kicking strongly to hold out a strong finishing King Farouk  ( last 200m 12.11) who got things wrong at the start, settled last, moved wide 600m out and motored home for second- very good run relishing his work- definite improver. Stable rep said of Glorious Ocean, “She looked like she absolutely lapped up the ground today. …we have got a few months to look forward to now. Explosive Roc who finished off the best of the rest. Midnight Countess closed off ok late in the slower part of the straight. Nice looking galloper.

Race 6

Seaaprince  was a good winner here after being 2nd outer, getting wide to the fast lane and drawing away late. The race time was similar to the R65 race run at a similar tempo which indicates he can cope in that grade at least. Big strong galloper who should go on with it. Miss Freelove  fought on a lot better. Manolo looked a definite improver and has the ability to win at least a maiden. Punta Mita  was under a ride 500m out in the puggy ground and once out wider in the better ground, ran home well for fourth.

Race 7

Justa Small Ransom  upset these from the inside then getting out wider to get a break on them and won well. Sasanqua  unwound strongly late and can win again soon. Grinner came home well for fourth and looked a definite improver.

Race 8

Welcome Back had the blinkers on go on which did the trick and won well. Baby Face fought on well in the puggy track. Heavily backed. Rely On Me  was caught wide in the open and even though the ground was better out there, stuck on well for fourth. Wait till he gets over more ground.
