Sunday preview posted

Good morning,

The preview of Otago is here and an update will be posted by noon.

Crikey, there was an avalanche of texts and emails after Dragon Leap took a detour 100 metres out from the post yesterday. I’ve had a good look at the replay from side on and front on and I just don’t know why Craig Grylls wasn’t carrying the whip in the left hand coming to the straight anyway. I was pleading with him to do that once he angled widest on the turn, after giving him a good run till then. When he loomed up 250m out with no other runners on his outer, there was always the chance that he would run out as many horses do there with the big screen on the inside of the course ( and it happened in the 2yo race earlier in the day). Before the 100 metre mark you could see from the head-on his tendency to veer out then he gave him a couple and he veered out more and kept going with a couple more then he reacted even worse and that is what cost him the race. I’ve watch thousands of races at Ellerslie and with experienced riders who can ride with the whip in both hands, at the first sign of running out, the whip gets quickly transferred to the left side. But most of them have it there in the first place on new runners there, especially with the big screen up. Maybe Craig can’t ride left handed which makes him a non-qualifier if Dragon Leap races there again.

After the race Craig was reported to have said on the Ellerslie site, ” Had a lovely trip. Felt like he was going to win quite easily but without warning he’s just run out so he’s cost himself.”  I may be off the mark, but I’ll be surprised if he is on a horse in the future there that is having his first start, that he won’t have the whip on the left side, especially if the big screen is up.

Anyway, that’s racing and if you were on the money back option for 2nd or 3rd, it would have helped soften the punch along with the early early $320 quaddie at Ellerslie and percentage of the $3,900 quaddie at Melbourne here
