When are we going to get a three year old Group 1 race run like a true test! The 1000 and 2000 Guineas were both sit sprint affairs and then the Levin Classic on Saturday was run slower than an elephant towing a bus up a hill. They averaged 12.70 seconds per 200m or 63.5 seconds for the first 1000m. Compare that to the Open handicap won by Germanicus, where they ran 12.06 and 60.28, around 19 lengths quicker, and all it does is prove who can sprint the fastest. They may well prove competitive over races up to 1400m, but in a truly run 1600m, against their best, there is a big question mark for me. When Troy Harris won on Catalyst in the 1000 Guineas he said he was quite glad he got a sit behind them as he was unsure about his ability to see out a strongly run 1600m. The way he won, you would say they still would have eaten his dust, but you just don’t know until they actually can do it as a three year old. So it really does make it interesting when our top three year olds inevitably make their way across the ditch.
